Potent and amorphous, “tense” can function in language as a noun, verb, or adjective, referring to everything from the hot, emotional bodily and emotional reactionary state of perceived stakes, to the cooler and more detached notions of delineating relativistic points in time. The word describes a situation, a body’s disposition, and a relation to time and history – from cringe reactions to online dating to the modern horror of daily news alerts in Drumpf’s America. Each member of SECRET DUNGEON has selected an artist whose work speaks to some aspect of “tense” however amorphous or tangential the relational aspect to the word, creating an interesting visual conversation between viewer and artwork, and between the artworks themselves.

TENSE explores the varying usage of the word through a variety of mediums and philosophies particular to each artist while challenging viewers to investigate how tension manifests in media, culture, and everyday life as it reflects the current sociopolitical climate. As nebulous in demonstration as it is sensational, TENSE takes viewers on a journey through a web of concepts and demonstrations that provoke and challenge the increasingly mundane routine of the modern experience.
